Nebreda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nebreda\u2019s Proof of Concept grant is entitled &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/news\/irb-barcelona-receives-20-of-the-erc-advanced-grants-awarded-in-spain\">P38 Cancer<\/a>&#8216;, and it aims to investigaate new breast cancer therapies based on available p38 MAPK inhibitors. \u201cOur lab results support a potential therapeutic use for p38 MAPK inhibitors in combination with chemotherapy drugs\u201d, says Nebreda.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers will use patient-derived samples of specific breast cancer subtypes for preclinical validation of a new drug combination therapy with potential benefit to patients. \u201cThis is a straightforward project with potentially tremendous socioeconomic benefits\u201d, explains Nebreda.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s ERC Proof of Concept Grant\u00a0call\u00a0will be done in instalments with three deadlines for applications. In this first round, 45 excellent scientists\u00a0based in 13 countries are being funded\u00a0\u00a0to investigate commercial applications of their frontier research results.\u00a0Their projects cover a spectrum of topics: from improving the cultivation of medicinal plants, to building car engines using nanomaterials and boosting turnout in elections by increasing the satisfaction of first-time voters.\u00a0The grants, worth up to \u20ac150,000, cover costs of activities to verify the innovation potential of ERC-funded projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The total budget of the 2015 Proof of Concept competition is \u20ac 20 million, of which \u20ac6.7 million is earmarked for this first round. 6 researchers working in Spain -5 of them in centres in Catalonia- have received an ERC PoC support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ICREA Research professor,\u00a0Angel R.
