The project, which will receive funding over the next three years, seeks to unravel why\u00a0metastatic cells\u00a0need\u00a0saturated fats\u00a0to be able to invade and colonize other organs.<\/p>\n<p>The postdoctoral researchers\u00a0Magdolna Djurec\u00a0and\u00a0Erika L\u00f3pez Arribillaga, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/es\/research\/stem-cells-and-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stem Cells and Cancer\u00a0Laboratory\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/research\/biomedical-genomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biomedical Genomics Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0respectively, have also each received a 4-year AECC postdoctoral fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0Aznar-Benitah,Djurec\u00a0studies the role of saturated fat during metastasis. \u201cUnderstanding how certain types of fat enhance\u00a0metastasis\u00a0gives us the opportunity of develop new therapeutic tools with which to prevent and inhibit metastatic colonization,\u201d explains the researcher.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez Arribillaga\u2019s\u00a0project aims to study the effect some pharmaceutical agents used in\u00a0chemotherapy\u00a0have on the genome of\u00a0colorectal cancer\u00a0cells and to draw up a \u201cdamage and repair map\u201d. The scientist comments that \u201cthis will allow us to explore new mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapy, as well as to address possible personalised therapies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The fight against cancer is one of the major challenges currently faced by society. Around 50% of cancer cases are cured and the objective is to achieve a 5-year survival of 70% by 2030.
