{"id":49912,"date":"2020-07-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-21T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/josep-samitier-awarded-with-the-narcis-monturiol-medal-for-his-contribution-to-the-catalan-system-of-science-and-technology\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T15:07:33","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T14:07:33","slug":"josep-samitier-awarded-with-the-narcis-monturiol-medal-for-his-contribution-to-the-catalan-system-of-science-and-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/josep-samitier-awarded-with-the-narcis-monturiol-medal-for-his-contribution-to-the-catalan-system-of-science-and-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Josep Samitier, awarded with the Narc\u00eds Monturiol medal for his contribution to the Catalan System of Science and Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the Government of Catalonia approved the Narc\u00eds Monturiol Medal award for scientific and technological merit to Josep Samitier Mart\u00ed, director of the IBEC, professor of the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Barcelona (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ub.edu\/web\/portal\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UB<\/a>) and president of the Catalan Association of Research Entities (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acer-catalunya.org\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ACER<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Samitier is a promoter of nanobioengineering through the research group he leads at IBEC, which focuses on applying nanotechnology to develop new biomedical systems and devices, mainly for diagnostic purposes, and integrated organ-on-a-chip microfluidic devices, to study diseases and for drug screening. Currently, he is the coordinator of the Spanish Nanomedicine Platform (<a href=\"https:\/\/nanomedspain.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NANOMED Spain<\/a>) and is also a member of the Institute of Catalan Studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iec.cat\/activitats\/entrada.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IEC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Josep Samitier was a founding member of the European Institute of Innovation &amp; Technology in Health (<a href=\"https:\/\/eithealth.eu\/in-your-region\/spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EIIT Health<\/a>). He was also co-director of the Microsystems Engineering Center (CEMIC) of the Technological Innovation Network (XiT). For four years he was deputy director of the Barcelona Science Park.<\/p>\n<p>In the academic field, in addition to being Professor at the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Barcelona (UB), he has been vice-rector for International Policy and Innovation, as well as International Research Programs, and acting rector of the same university.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003 he received the City of Barcelona Award in the category of technological innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Winners of the\u00a0Narc\u00eds Monturiol Awards\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/universitatsirecerca.gencat.cat\/en\/detalls\/article\/Colleccio-llibrets-Guardons-Narcis-Monturiol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Narc\u00eds Monturiol Medal and Plaque<\/a>\u00a0instituted by the Generalitat in 1982, distinguish individuals and entities for their outstanding contribution to the development of science and technology in Catalonia. This year, ten researchers from the Catalan knowledge system (six men and four women) have received this distinction and the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) has received the Narc\u00eds Monturiol Plate, which recognizes an institution of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The people who will receive the Narc\u00eds Monturiol Medal for scientific and technological merit are: Ramon Brugada and Terradellas, Paul Christou, M. Teresa Espinal and Farr\u00e9, Manel Esteller, Pilar Garc\u00eda Almirall, Paloma Mas, Victoria Reyes Garc\u00eda, Jordi Salas-Salvad\u00f3, Josep Samitier and Mart\u00ed and Sebasti\u00e1n Xamb\u00f3 Descamps.<\/p>\n<p>With the resolution approved yesterday, the Catalan Government has awarded a total of 291 Narc\u00eds Monturiol Medals (227 men and 64 women), while the institutions awarded the Narc\u00eds Monturiol Plaque have been forty-six. Award-winning individuals and institutions span all fields of knowledge, from life and health sciences to humanities and social sciences, through architecture, engineering, and other sciences.
