The main conclusion drawn from the work is that only cancer cells that express the protein CD36 on their surface have the capacity to colonize and grow in other organs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis protein is a fatty acid receptor, and we have discovered that, during metastasis, cells that have this molecule use lipids from their microenvironment, thus conferring them the capacity to migrate to and grow in distant organs,\u201d explains the scientist.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this discovery, the researchers have been able to use monoclonal antibodies that target CD36, obtaining good results in animals. \u201cUsing this anti-CD36 treatment, we have been able to inhibit the onset of metastasis in mice with a primary tumour but that have not yet developed metastasis,\u201d concludes\u00a0Gloria Pascual.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px\">Acknowledgement of scientific progress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s awards, each worth \u20ac10,000, mark the 20th year in which the Pfizer Foundation has acknowledged scientific progress in the fields of life sciences in the categories \u201cBasic Research\u201d and \u201cClinical Research\u201d.\u00a0The other prize was given to Bel\u00e9n Guti\u00e9rrez-Guti\u00e9rrez, from the Hospital Virgen Macarena in Seville, for her work on multi-resistant bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Both scientists received their prizes yesterday in a presentation ceremony held in Madrid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gloria Pascual, associate researcher at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/portal\/en\/cerca?p_p_id=cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet&amp;p_p_lifecycle=0&amp;p_p_state=maximized&amp;p_p_mode=view&amp;p_p_col_id=column-1&amp;p_p_col_count=1&amp;_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_jspPage=%2Fhtml%2Fcommon%2Fdetall-empresa.jsp&amp;_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_empresaId=ENT_000001&amp;_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_redirect=%2Fportal%2Fca%2Fcerca%3Fp_p_id%3Dcercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet%26p_p_lifecycle%3D0%26p_p_mode%3Dview%26_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_keywords%3Dirb%26_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_tab%3D1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IRB Barcelona<\/a>) in the Barcelona Science Park, has been awarded a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionpfizer.org\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/innovacion\/convocatoria_premios_innovacion_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scientific Innovation Prize\u00a0from the Pfizer Foundation,<\/a> within the &#8216;Basic Research&#8217; category.
