Spain is represented within Elixir by the National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCII), under the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Entering this partnership will allow Spain to strengthen its ties with Europe and to lead large-scale projects in biomedicine, such as those related to human genomic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The National Bioinformatics Institute (INB), \u00a0the Spanish scientific node, comprise top-level institutions such as the\u00a0National Cancer Research Centre\u00a0(CNIO), the\u00a0Centre for Genomic Regulation\u00a0(CRG) \u2013which includes the\u00a0Centro Nacional de An\u00e1lisis Gen\u00f3mico\u00a0(CNAG-CRG)-, the\u00a0Pompeu Fabra University\u00a0(UPF), the\u00a0Institute for Research in Biomedicine\u00a0(IRB Barcelona), and the\u00a0Barcelona Supercomputing Center\u2013Centro Nacional de Supercomputaci\u00f3n (BSC-CNS).<\/p>\n<p>INB&#8217;s mission is to transfer the Elixir expertise to the laboratories of research institutions and businesses. It will coordinate, integrate and develop Spanish bioinformatics resources in genomics, proteomics, translational medicine, and precision\/personalized medicine within the international context of Elixir. Spanish scientists have already collaborated in the Elixir Pilot action with\u00a0the\u00a0European Bioinformatics Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebi.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EBI<\/a>) part of the\u00a0European Molecular Biology Laboratory (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMBL<\/a>).\u00a0under the leadership of CRG, to develop the\u00a0European Genome-phenome Archive\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/ega.crg.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EGA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The integration of Europe\u2019s bioinformatics resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elixir is an inter-governmental organisation\u00a0which builds on existing data resources and services within Europe to\u00a0aim is to manage, exploit, and distribute the massive amounts of information generated currently by biomedical research.\u00a0Elixir\u00a0was created in December 2013 as an international consortium. Until now, its fully operational members have comprised the European Molecular Biology Laboratory\u00a0(EMBL) and eleven countries: the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spanish participation in Elixir has been promoted by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) through its policy to reinforce the internationalization of Spanish science and innovativeness in science and technology. Elixir s included in the Roadmap of Research Infrastructures from the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), and with a very high priority in the Spanish Roadmap.
