{"id":49750,"date":"2018-06-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/bacteria-need-vitamins-too\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:59:02","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:59:02","slug":"bacteria-need-vitamins-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/bacteria-need-vitamins-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Bacteria need vitamins too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>P. aeruginosa\u00a0bacteria cause chronic lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by forming a mature biofilm \u2013 in which cells stick to each other and can grow on many different surfaces \u2013 that lets them grow and adapt.<\/p>\n<p>In bacteria, as in all living organisms, the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) is critical for the formation of the building blocks needed for DNA synthesis and repair.\u00a0P. aeruginosa\u00a0is one of the few bacteria that encode all three known RNR classes: Ia, which is oxygen dependent, and II and III, which are active in the absence of oxygen. These three RNRs increase the capacity of the bacterium to grow in the different aerobic and anaerobic environments generated throughout biofilms; without them, fully mature biofilms will not be able to establish themselves.This biofilm not only enhances cell-to-cell communication for the bacteria, thus allowing the infection to increase and thrive, but it also increases the chances of developing new antibiotic resistance and escape from the body\u2019s immune system.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers have shown that the class II RNRs require a vitamin B12 cofactor to work properly. \u201cWe knew that\u00a0P. aeruginosa\u00a0synthesizes vitamin B12 for different metabolic reactions,\u201d explains Eduard Torrents, who leads IBEC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/bactinf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bacterial infections: antimicrobial therapies<\/a>\u00a0research group. \u201cWe demonstrated that increased vitamin B12 levels during aerobic, stationary and biofilm growth activate class II RNR activity, meaning that the presence of this vitamin is crucial to the activity of the essential class of RNR that enables biofilms to develop even in challenging conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A better understanding how bacteria develop a mature biofilm in order to spread their infection could shed light on how to tackle this stage of the\u00a0P. aeruginosa\u00a0life cycle and develop specific, resistant drug therapies essential for the treatment of chronic bacterial infections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25baReference article:\u00a0<\/strong>Anna Crespo, N\u00faria Blanco-Cabra and Eduard Torrents (2018).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmicb.2018.00986\/full\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" style=\"font-weight: 200\" target=\"_blank\">Aerobic Vitamin B12 Biosynthesis Is Essential for Pseudomonas aeruginosa Class II Ribonucleotide Reductase Activity During Planktonic and Biofilm Growth<\/a>.\u00a0Front.
