The event was attended by Adela \u00a0Farr\u00e9, director of Communication, Marketing and Promotion at PCB; Sara Sherwood, Head of Communications\u00a0and External\u00a0Relations\u00a0of the Institute for Biomedical Research in Barcelona (IRB Barcelona<\/a>); Josep M. Fern\u00e1ndez, Biology professor at the University of Barcelona \u00a0(UB<\/a>) and collaborator of the Batx2Lab project; and Miriam Mart\u00ednez, coordinator of\u00a0 PCB\u00b4s\u00a0 Research in Society program, accompanied by participating students and tutors competing in this edition. This year, 39 students\u00a0 out of the 90 applications received were selected.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the event, the attendees had the oppoortunity to enjoy the scientific monolog “Terrestrial Migrains” by physic and scientific writer, Daniel Garcia, member of the ‘Big Van: Scientist on Wheels<\/a>‘, who made the night with his sense of humor and knowledge of science, by interaction with the audience.<\/p>\n

BATX2LAB is part of the “Research in Society” outreach and science dissemination\u00a0 program of Parc Cientific de Barcelona. The initiative offers eleventh graders the possibility of carrying out the practical part of their research in different laboratories located at the PCB and tutored by a researcher who supports and guides students throughout the development process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The BATX2LAB program concludes each year with the presentation of the awards to the winning best works which will also be present at a stand at the ‘Live Research’ fair promoted by PCB (Click here<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0see the video on YouTube).<\/span>This year\u00a0the fair will be held at Cosmocaixa Barcelona from 6 to 9 April, where students will have the chance to explain all visitors the research projects they carried out.<\/p>\n

The winners for 2015-2016 were:<\/p>\n

\u2013Ariadna Colomer Morante for her work \u2018Study of caffeine toxicity in daphnia and cells\u2019 from the Alexandre Satorras secondary school. Center\u00b4s tutor: Margarita Soriano. PCB\u00b4s tutor: David Ramos, researcher at the Toxicology Unit \u00a0(UTOX-PCB).
\n\u2013 Arnau Bueno Tricas for his work \u201cGeneration of prosthesis from organic skin\u201d from the de la Escuela Virgen Mar\u00eda de N\u00faria secondary school. Center\u00b4s tutor: Albert Pesquero. PCB\u00b4s tutor: Albert Garcia Casta\u00f1o, researcher at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia \u00a0(IBEC).<\/p>\n

Crazy About Biomedicine<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the same event, the award to best research work carried out under the ‘Crazy About Biomedicine<\/a>‘\u00a0was also given.The prize to the best research work carried out under the , organised by IRB Barcelona with the collaboration of Fundaci\u00f3n Catalu\u00f1a\u2013La Pedrera and the support of the PCB.<\/p>\n

The winning student was Miriam Condeminas for her work “Analysis of epithelial tumors in Drosophila melanogaster wing imaginarydiscs” from the Immaculada Concepci\u00f3 secondary school. Center\u00b4s tutor: Teresa Contreras. IRB Barcelona tutor: Mariana Muzzopapa.<\/p>\n

‘Crazy About Biomedicine’ is a one year long course aimed at freshmen secondary school student wishing to participate in some fascinating projects that are currently being done in the field of life sciences. During last year, from January to December 2015, 17 girls and 7 boys had the opportunity to delve into the theory and scientific techniques in biomedicine, working hand in hand with 12 doctoral researchers of various nationalities at IRB\u00b4s laboratory facilities.<\/p>\n
