The meeting was attended by Ignasi Belda CEO at the Barcelona Science Park; Llu\u00eds Farr\u00e9s, director of Knowledge, Education and Research at the Catalonia-La Pedrera Foundation;\u00a0Muriel Arimon, Public Engagement and Science Education officer at the Institute for Biomedical Research (IRB Barcelona) and\u00a0Josep M. Fern\u00e1ndez-Novell, professor at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona (UB), accompanied by participating students and tutors competing in this edition.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the event, the attendees had the opportunity to enjoy the scientific monolog ‘Genetics and superheroes’\u00a0by the\u00a0biologist Helena Gonz\u00e1lez\u00a0member of the \u2019Big Van: cient\u00edficos sobre ruedas<\/a>‘\u00a0(Big Van: Scientist on Wheels), who made the night with his sense of humor and knowledge of science, by interaction with the audience.<\/p>\n

BATX2LAB It is part of the “Research in Society” outreach and science dissemination\u00a0program of the Barcelona Science park. The initiative offers eleventh graders the possibility of carrying out the practical part of their research in different laboratories at\u00a0PCB and tutored by a researcher who supports and guides students throughout the development process.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Theprogram concludes each year with the presentation of the awards to the winning best works which will also be present at a stand at the ‘Live Research Fair<\/a>‘\u00a0promoted by PCB.\u00a0This year\u00a0the fair will be held at Cosmocaixa Barcelona from 3 to 6 May, where students will have the chance to explain all visitors the research projects they carried out.<\/p>\n

The winners of\u00a0\u00a0BATX2LAB 2016-2017 are:<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Mark Gutierrez, from La Salle Manlleu, for his work “El m\u00f3n bacteri\u00e0: Estudi comparatiu entre l\u2019acci\u00f3 dels antibi\u00f2tics i la dels tractaments naturals sobre els bacteris i de l\u2019aparici\u00f3 de resist\u00e8ncies”.\u00a0Secondary school’s tutor: Josep Guardia. PCB’s tutor:\u00a0Anna Crespo (IBEC<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Elisa Lora, from the\u00a0Institut Jaume Balmes, for her work\u00a0“Buscant un p\u00e8ptid que lligui”. Secondary school’s tutor: Manel Aula. PCB’s tutor:\u00a0Salvador Guardiola (IRB Barcelona<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Roger Gibert, from the Institut Ernest Lluch\u00a0secondary school, for his work “Nano un univers min\u00fascul”.\u00a0Secondary school’s tutor: Carolina Mart\u00ednez. PCB’s tutor:\u00a0Jordi Diaz\u00a0(CCiTUB)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nCrazy About Biomedicine<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the same event,\u00a0the award\u00a0to\u00a0best research work\u00a0carried out under the ‘Crazy About Biomedicine<\/a>‘\u00a0was also given. The winning student was Mar Fillat Faidella from\u00a0the Institut Samuel Gili i Gaya\u00a0for her work “Polaritzaci\u00f3 neuronal: a les ordres dels microt\u00fabuls. Estudiant les din\u00e0miques microtubul\u00b7lars durant la diferenciaci\u00f3 axonal” (Secondary school’s tutor: Carme Morancho \u2013 \u00a0PCB’s tutor:\u00a0Ricardo Viais, IRB Barcelona).<\/p>\n

‘Crazy About Biomedicine’ is a\u00a0year-long\u00a0workshop in the\u00a0life sciences\u00a0for high-school students organized by IRB Barcelona within the series “Crazy About Science<\/a>” of the\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3 Catalunya \u2013 La Pedrera<\/a>. During last year, 24 students\u00a0had the opportunity to delve into the theory and scientific techniques in biomedicine, working hand in hand with 12 doctoral researchers of various nationalities at IRB\u00b4s laboratory facilities.<\/p>\n
