{"id":49650,"date":"2017-05-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-15T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/a-cellular-model-to-study-the-relation-between-neurodegenerative-diseases-is-designed\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:56:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:56:13","slug":"a-cellular-model-to-study-the-relation-between-neurodegenerative-diseases-is-designed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/a-cellular-model-to-study-the-relation-between-neurodegenerative-diseases-is-designed\/","title":{"rendered":"A cellular model to study the relation between neurodegenerative diseases is designed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new study \u2013led by Jos\u00e9 Antonio del R\u00edo, professor from the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology of the\u00a0Faculty of Biology<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub.edu\/biologia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">,<\/a>\u00a0and member of the Institute of Neurosciences of the UB and IBEC\u2013\u00a0results from the collaboration between experts from the Mollecular and Cellular Neurobiotechnology Group from IBEC, and the neuropathologist Isidre Ferrer, professor from the\u00a0Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences\u00a0and the\u00a0Institute of Neurosciences of the UB, and the neurologist Adolfo L\u00f3pez, from the Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastian.<\/p>\n<p>The research started with the discovery of a patient with tauopathy \u2013a neurodegenerative disorder- and a genetic mutation causing another rare neurodegenerative disease, in particular, the Gerstmann-Str\u00e4ussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS), a prionopathy involving a gene mutation in the prion protein PRNP. Finding two neurodegenerative diseases with different origins in the same patient was an exceptional finding, which encouraged them to go on with the research. With the donation of a biological tissue from a family member of the patient, who had the same mutation, the experts could reprogram these somatic cells and turn them into neurons to study the relation between tauopathy and the observed mutation in the gene\u00a0PRNP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe neurons generated in this study are the first line of induced cells out of fibroblasts from a patient with GSS\u201d says Jos\u00e9 Antonio del R\u00edo, professor of the University of Barcelona and a main researcher of the IBEC.<\/p>\n<p>According to the neurologist Andreu Matamoros, researcher from the group led by Jos\u00e9 Antonio del R\u00edo in IBEC and first author of the study, \u201cthis unexpected relation opens the door to a search for new therapeutic targets to prevent both diseases from complementing each other in order to cause the neurodegeneration and neuronal death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>\u2022 Reference article:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Matamoros-Angles, A., Gayosso, L.M., Richaud-Patin, Y. et al.
