Over the last two years they have attracted considerable attention due to their key functions in the cell and their relation to several diseases. Although first observed many years ago\u2014Ram\u00f3n y Cajal detected them\u2014the attention they are receiving is as recent as the name given to describe them.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are intrigued because these protein aggregates, which resemble drops of oil in the aqueous medium of the cell cytoplasm, are relevant for cell activity and regulation\u2014so much so that they are described as being membraneless organelles.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in\u00a0eLife\u00a0and headed by the ICREA researcher\u00a0Ra\u00fal M\u00e9ndez\u00a0and in collaboration withXavier Salvatella, both at IRB Barcelona, provides one of the most detailed examples of the regulation of the dynamics of these liquid-like droplets\u2014which in this case comprise CPEB4\u2014during the cell cycle.<\/p>\n<p>CPEB4 is an RNA-binding protein that exerts its activity in the cytoplasm by activating or repressing messenger RNA (mRNA) translation to proteins. Previous work by the group described how CPEB4 regulates the timing of the expression of cell division regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Among other features, CPEB4 is characterized by having unstructured sections, that is to say regions of the proteins that remain unfolded, which are responsible for mediating the development of liquid-like droplets and the regulation of the same during the cell cycle.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e9ndez\u2019s team has described in depth how the droplets of CPEB4 form and break up and the kinases involved in the phosphorylation of the proteins required to breakdown the aggregates and release mRNA.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to providing insight into how CPEB4 is regulated during the cell cycle, the study strengthens two notions in relation to liquid-like droplets\u2014organelles that have the capacity to regulate protein and mRNA activities and \u201cwhich were previously thought to be dispersed in the cytoplasm,\u201d says\u00a0M\u00e9ndez.<\/p>\n<p>First, the researchers believe that the vast majority of RNA-binding proteins probably form these organelles.\u00a0\u201cThis is the first study that characterises how this process is regulated during the cell cycle for a protein that binds and regulates the translation of a family of mRNAs, and it paves the way for testing other families,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>The second notion is that only disordered proteins or disordered regions can form protein droplets.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, most human proteins have disordered regions. \u201cEvolution has selected disordered regions probably because they confer dynamics and versatility to proteins\u2014greater speed to assemble and dissasemble interactions\u2014which is advantageous for signalling,\u201d explains\u00a0Xavier Salvatella, an ICREA researcher at IRB Barcelona who specializes in molecular biophysics and disordered proteins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A study at I<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/portal\/en\/cerca?p_p_id=cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet&amp;p_p_lifecycle=0&amp;p_p_state=maximized&amp;p_p_mode=view&amp;p_p_col_id=column-1&amp;p_p_col_count=1&amp;_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_jspPage=%2Fhtml%2Fcommon%2Fdetall-empresa.jsp&amp;_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_empresaId=ENT_000001&amp;_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_redirect=%2Fportal%2Fca%2Fcerca%3Fp_p_id%3Dcercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet%26p_p_lifecycle%3D0%26p_p_mode%3Dview%26_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_keywords%3Dirb%26_cercador_WAR_empleatsempresesportlet_tab%3D1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RB Barcelona<\/a>, located at PCB,\u00a0sheds light on the dynamics of protein aggregates that behave like \u201cdroplets of oil in water\u201d and that are described as membraneless cytoplasmic organelles.These organelles regulate protein activity during cell division.This is the first study at the Institute to address the so-called <em>liquid-like droplets<\/em>, which are attracting the attention of researchers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":53433,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-49580","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
