{"id":49500,"date":"2019-09-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-22T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/researchers-from-ibec-and-irb-barcelona-awarded-by-la-caixa-for-their-pioneering-research-projects\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:55:30","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:55:30","slug":"researchers-from-ibec-and-irb-barcelona-awarded-by-la-caixa-for-their-pioneering-research-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/researchers-from-ibec-and-irb-barcelona-awarded-by-la-caixa-for-their-pioneering-research-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers from IBEC and IRB Barcelona awarded by \u201cla Caixa\u201d for their pioneering research projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cQuestions for the Future\u201d is the central theme that all 79 projects\u00a0awarded by \u201dla Caixa\u201d Banking Foundation\u00a0revolve around, as each seeks answers that will help to build a better future for society.\u00a0The research projects respond to the three lines of action promoted by the Foundation in the field of research: <a href=\"https:\/\/obrasociallacaixa.org\/en\/investigacion-y-becas\/becas-de-la-caixa\/posdoctorado-junior-leader\/descripcion-del-programa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Postdoctoral Junior Leader fellowships<\/a>\u00a0to foster research talent; support for<a href=\"https:\/\/obrasociallacaixa.org\/en\/investigacion-y-becas\/convocatorias-de-investigacion\/convocatoria-de-investigacion-en-salud\/descripcion-del-programa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Biomedical and Health Research Projects<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caixaimpulse.com\/en\/web\/guest\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CaixaImpulse<\/a>, a programme aimed at transferring the results of biomedical research to society.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>IBEC research projects<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Antonio del R\u00edo, Pau Gorostiza, and Samuel S\u00e1nchez have been awarded in two of the \u201cla Caixa\u201d calls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/member\/213\/Jos%C3%A9+Antonio+Del+R%C3%ADo+Fern%C3%A1ndez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Del R\u00edo<\/a>,\u00a0principal investigator of the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiotechnology Group at IBEC, is one of the winners of the\u00a0second edition of the call for applications in biomedicine and health. Del R\u00edo\u2019s project focuses on analysing the molecular mechanisms involved in the genesis and propagation of tau protein in brain cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/member\/100\/Pau+Gorostiza+Langa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pau\u00a0Gorostiza<\/a>,\u00a0principal investigator of the Nanoprobes and Nanoswitches Group, also received an award at the second edition of the call for applications for\u00a0research projects in biomedicine and health. In this case, for his project on degenerative eye conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, which causes blindness due to the progressive degeneration of the cones and rods, which are the light sensitive cells.\u00a0The end goal is to recover the light sensitivity of a human retina under laboratory conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/member\/936\/Samuel+S%C3%A1nchez+Ord%C3%B3%C3%B1ez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Samuel S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, principal investigator of the Smart nano-bio devices group at IBEC, received the\u00a0CaixaImpulse\u00a0award for his \u201cTERANOBOTS\u201d project. This patented technology is based on nanomotrs powered by urease which offers a new strategy for reducing the recurrence of bladder cancer. As a result of their improved mobility, nanomotrs can better penetrate the cancerous tissue and improve treatment efficacy.<strong> More information: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/tres-investigadores-del-ibec-premiados-con-becas-de-la-caixa-por-sus-proyectos-de-investigacion-pionera-y-de-gran-impacto-social\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBEC website [+]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>IRB Barcelona research projects<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>IRB Barcelona researchers\u00a0Eduard Batlle\u00a0and\u00a0Ra\u00fal M\u00e9ndez\u00a0obtained two grants from the call for Research projects in biomedicine and health,\u00a0Meritxel Teixid\u00f3\u00a0received a grant from the CaixaImpulse Programme, and\u00a0Enrique Marcos\u00a0was awarded a Postdoctoral fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/profile\/eduard-batlle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eduard Batlle<\/a>, ICREA researcher and head of the\u00a0Colorectal Cancer Lab, aims to develop new therapies aimed at curing patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. The objective of this project is to discover how tumour cells modify their environment to elude the immune system and how they allow the regeneration of the tumour.\u00a0his research is expected to contribute to the development of new\u00a0oncological therapies.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0ICREA researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/ca\/profile\/raul-mendez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ra\u00fal M\u00e9ndez<\/a>,\u00a0head of\u00a0the\u00a0Translational Control of Cell Cycle and Differentiation\u00a0Lab, studies how liver cells undergo dramatic changes in their gene expression in response to hypercaloric diets and how these changes can contribute to the development of tumours. In part, these modifications are carried by RNA-binding proteins. The award-winning project aims to unravel the deregulation of these RNA-binding proteins and determine how they affect the inflammation of the liver and the response of the immune system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/profile\/meritxell-teixido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meritxell Teixid\u00f3<\/a>, associate researcher in the\u00a0Design, Synthesis and Structure of Proteins and Peptides Lab, works on the development of shuttle-peptides that allow drugs to reach the brain. With this CaixaImpulse project, Teixid\u00f3 intends to advance the preclinical development of one of the compounds with the greatest therapeutic potential for a specific type of pediatric glioma.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biological processes are regulated by proteins that can swap between active and inactive states in function of cell requirements and the environment. The project led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irbbarcelona.org\/en\/profile\/enrique-marcos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Enrique Marcos<\/a>,\u00a0postdoctoral researcher in the\u00a0Molecular Modelling and Bioinformatics Lab, intends to design small molecule-responsive switches for these proteins.
