The presentation aims at describing the general objectives of EIT Health and the particular goals of EIT Spain.<\/p>\n<p>EIT Health is a consortium of more than 144 leading businesses, research centres and universities from fourteen European countries. With a total volume of 2.1 billion euros it is one of the largest public funded initiatives for health worldwide. In 2016, the consortium expects to incubate approximately eighty new business ideas, rising to 140 in 2018. It aims to create seventy start-ups per year and have one million students taking part in its educational online programmes\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/eit.europa.eu\/eit-community\/eit-alumni\">EIT Alumni<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>EIT Health co-location centres are in Spain, France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden and Germany. Barcelona headquarters will provide access to European funds for education and innovation projects.\u00a0Spanish partners\u00a0are:\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">University of Barcelona &#8211; Hospital Cl\u00ednic,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">Atos,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">IESE Business School,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC),\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">Biomechanics Institute of Valencia (IBV),<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">Technical University of Madrid (UPM),\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">Ferrer International and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;background-color: initial\">Abbott Laboratories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Associate partners are: Biocat,\u00a0Agency for Health Quality and Assessment of Catalonia (AQuAS),\u00a0Biopolis,\u00a0Spanish National Research Council (CSIC),\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3 Banc\u00e0ria la Caixa\u00a0Gallina Blanca,\u00a0GMV, Inveniam Innovation,\u00a0Leitat\u00a0Linkcare Health Services,\u00a0Other Side Mirror (OSM),\u00a0PAU Education,\u00a0Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de D\u00e9u,\u00a0Prevenci\u00f3n Fremap,\u00a0Sedecal,\u00a0Servicio Madrile\u00f1o de Salud (SERMAS) and\u00a0Telef\u00f3nica.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0EIT\u00a0is an independent body of the European Union set up in 2008 to spur innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe to overcome some of its greatest challenges. It brings together leading higher education institutions, research labs and companies to form dynamic cross-border partnership \u2014Knowledge and Innovation Communities, KICs\u2014 that develop innovative products and services, start new companies, and train a new generation of entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>The first three KICs were set up in 2009: <a href=\"http:\/\/eit.europa.eu\/eit-community\/kic-innoenergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KIC InnoEnergy<\/a>\u00a0(centred on sustainable energy), <a href=\"http:\/\/eit.europa.eu\/eit-community\/climate-kic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Climate-KIC<\/a>\u00a0(focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eit.europa.eu\/eit-community\/eit-ict-labs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EIT ICT Labs<\/a> (centred on the society of information and communication). Then, the European Union decided to boost EIT activities between 2014 and 2020 within the research and innovation Horizon 2020 and it increased its budged to 2,7 billion euros.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, on 14 February 2014, the EIT set up a new call to select two new KICs: one that becomes a model of innovation in healthy living and active ageing, and other focused on raw materials, sustainable exploration, extraction, processing, recycling and substitution, <a href=\"http:\/\/eit.europa.eu\/eit-community\/eit-raw-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EIT Raw Materials<\/a>.
