Eduard Batlle, who holds an ICREA contract, heads the Colorectal Cancer and Intestinal Epithelium Biology Group at the Institute of Biomedical Research of the PCB (IRB-PCB). A graduate in Biology and Ph.D. in Molecular and Genetic Biology from the University of Barcelona (UB), he specializes in cancer and completed his post-doc training in the Netherlands Institute for Developmental Biology in Utrecht and the Institute for Molecular Biology and Tumor Research at Marburg (Germany). His laboratory studies the molecular bases of the onset and progression of colorectal cancer in order to find new diagnostic and therapeutic treatments. Specifically, Eduard Batlle focuses on two key research aspects of colorectal cancer: the characterisation of similarities and differences between genetic programmes coded in the intestinal stem cell and the founding cell of colorectal tumours; and the characterisation of metastasis. The latter line of research is the project that is considered in this year’s EURYI Award.<\/p>\n
Marco Mil\u00e1n graduated in Biology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid. He is the head of the Developmental Biology of Drosphila Group at the IRB-PCB. Marco Mil\u00e1n holds an ICREA contract and his research focuses on the mechanisms through which the cells of pluricellular organisms are organised into distinct tissues and organs. This research group aims to identify the new genes involved in the wing growth of Drosophila and in the doral-ventral affinity boundary. Marco Mil\u00e1n completed his post-doc training in the Molecular Biology Centre of Madrid and the European Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Heidelberg (Germany). <\/p>\n
N\u00faria L\u00f3pez was awarded a Ramon y Cajal contract in 2001 and works at the Dept. of Physical Chemistry at the UB. She studies heterogeneous catalysers using theoretical methods at the Centre for Research in Theoretical Chemistry (CeRQT). She graduated in Chemistry from the UB and obtained her Ph.D. from the same institution and completed her post-doc training in the Center for Atomic-scale Materials Physics in Denmark. Her research activity focusis on the application of theoretical methods for useful catalytic materials to study hydrogen as a new source of energy. The project presented for the EURYI awards addresses nanostructural materials for renewable energy applications from first principles atomistic design. <\/p>\n
The EURYI Award Scheme is an initiative of the association that groups the main research organisations of 16 European countries (EUROHORCs), in collaboration with the European Science Foundation (ESF). This scheme aims to contribute to building the so-called European Research Area (ERA) through the development of European science and the training of a new generation of leading investigators. <\/p>\n

The EURYI programme awards between 750,000-1,250,000 euros over five years. Candidates of any nationality who wish to establish their own research team in Europe, and projects in any field of research are considered.
