{"id":47243,"date":"2011-05-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-22T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/plithotaxis-how-crowds-of-cells-find-their-way\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:51:18","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:51:18","slug":"plithotaxis-how-crowds-of-cells-find-their-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/plithotaxis-how-crowds-of-cells-find-their-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Plithotaxis: how crowds of cells find their way"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sm-6 detall-noticia-imatges\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"item active one-image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"icon-search\" href='http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/1306155058387.jpg'><\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img src='http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/1306155058387.jpg' \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\t\t\tIn the journal Nature Materials (<a>doi:10.1038\/nmat3036<\/a>), the scientists describe their newly discovered principle, plithotaxis, in which migrating cells pull on each other in a very disordered yet effective manner to reach their common goal: the movement of the crowd as a whole. &#8220;Our findings show that each cell in a group performs a wild and chaotic dance of its own that, while appearing random, contributes to the intended direction of the movement and is innately collective,&#8221; explains  IBEC researcher Xavier Trepat. <\/p>\n<p> Xavier and his collaborators in the United States, Dhananjay Tambe, C. Corey Hardin and Jeffrey Fredberg, used a method they developed called Monolayer Stress Microscopy (MSM) to look at the mechanical forces exerted at cell-cell junctions in migrating groups. &#8220;Newton taught us that the motion of any object cannot be understood except in the context of forces,&#8221; explains Xavier. &#8220;Cells are no exception.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p> <a>More information<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Processes like tissue regeneration and cancer metastasis rely on groups of cells moving long distances without losing their cohesiveness, but how they do this has remained unknown.
