{"id":47090,"date":"2011-03-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-09T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/were-made-of-glass-say-scientists\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:51:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:51:03","slug":"were-made-of-glass-say-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/were-made-of-glass-say-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re made of glass, say scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a study published in PNAS, researcher Xavier Trepat from Barcelona&#8217;s Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia \u2013 based at the Barcelona Science Park\u2013 and his collaborators have been looking at collective cell migration, which occurs in our tissue for good or bad: during embryonic development or wound healing, for example, but on the other hand in cancer invasion. So far, much of the research into how this migration takes place has been done on individual cells. By looking at a collection of migrating cells \u2013 in this case, in cells from the surface of the kidney \u2013 the scientists discovered that their movement as a group \u2013 migration slowing as cell density rises, and the fastest cells moving in large groups whose scale grows with increasing cell density \u2013 is similar to a process called glass transition. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibecbarcelona.eu\/content\/view\/387\/16\/lang,en_EN\/\" class=\"email\">For more information<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People can be brittle, transparent, shattered, or have a heart of glass.
