During this campaign, which started in September of last year, the Hesperides has also traveled through Gibraltar, through the underwater mountains of the Alboran sea, through the landslides of the Ibiza channel, and through the deep basin located north of Minorca. The campaign’s scientific team is comprised of members of the Consolidated Marine Geosciences Research Group of the UB, of the National Institute of Halieutic Research of Casablanca (Morocco) and technicians from the Marine Technology Unit (UTM-CSIC). <\/p>\n

The scientific campaign, which will finalise in the waters of Cartagena, is part of the European project Hermione (Hotspot Ecosystem Research and Man’s Impact On European Seas) pertaining to the 7th framework programme. The project, which was inititated in 2009 and will take place over the course of 3 years, has nearly 38 research teams from all over Europe, and aims to study the functioning of deep marine ecosystems in the Arctic, North Atlantic and Mediterrenean waters. <\/p>\n
