Visitors will be able to emulate the tasks performed by a surgeon using a 3D virtual program, go back in time 200,000 years in order to discover the origin of their ancestors, discover the relationship between the synchrotron and the study of certain diseases, and even take their DNA home in a pot. The research centres and institutes that will participate in this edition include the Institute for Research in Biomedicine of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the Pomeu Fabra University, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Alba Synchrotron, the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute, the August Pi i Sunyer Institute of Biomedical Research (IDIBAPS), the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute and the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park. <\/p>\n
The following individuals will take part in the inauguration ceremony: the director of the Obra Social La Caixa de Catalunya, Miquel Perdiguer, the rector of the University of Barcelona, D\u00eddac Ram\u00edrez, the general director of the Barcelona Science Park, Fernando Albericio, the president of the Catalan Society of Biology, Jaume Revent\u00f3s, and the Head of the Dissemination of Science division of the Barcelona Science Park, Rosina Malagrida. <\/p>\n
The “Research Live” Fair has been carried out in collaboration with the Catalan Society of Biology, the Ministry of Innovation, Universities and Enterprises of the Catalan Government, and is part of the Barcelona Science Park’s science dissemination programme “Research in Society”, a programme that offers over 120 activities in which 6,000 people participate each year. <\/p>\n
This event is an almost unique initiative in the city, given that it provides the “hands-on” opportunity to communicate “live science” by allowing the actual researchers to share directly with the public some of the projects that are currently being conducted and the methods used by different scientists in their everday work. The aim is to bring the research world closer to society, to facilitate the dialogue between researchers and citizens and to inspire vocations in young students. <\/p>\n
This seventh edition presents projects from very different fields, such as evolutionary biology, physics, optical engineering, immunology, neurosciences, simulation technologies and intelligent signal processing, amongst others. Thanks to these projects visitors will be able to participate in the Genographic project, which employs the study of DNA to research the migrations that the human species has made throughout history, to understand the utility of laser technology in eye check-ups, to ascertain the applications of gene therapy for the treatment of hereditary diseases and to participate in the research of a new drug to fight malaria, amongst many other proposals. <\/p>\n
