\t\t\tChemical biology is a new discipline that is arousing growing interest. One indication of this fact is the creation of diverse databases in the area, such as Pubchem in the United States, Chembionet in Germany, and Chembiobank in Spain, coordinated by Jordi Quintana, symposium chair and director of the Drug Discovery Platform at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). The Drug Discovery Platform is an initiative undertaken by the PCB, Santiago de Compostela University (USC), IMIM at the PRBB, and Pompeu Fabra University (USC) in order to generate an academic chemical compound library at the national level, bringing together the compounds’ functions and\/or possible applications based on experimental and virtual screening results. In recent years, new scientific journals focusing their attention on this area of research have also appeared, including Nature Chemical Biology and ACS Chemical Biology. <\/p>\n

The symposium will take place in two venues: the PCB’s Antoni Caparr\u00f3s Auditorium, which will host the welcome ceremony and introductory session on 10 July, and the auditorium of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, which will host the closing session on 11 July. The venues have been selected to reflect the close involvement of the PCB and IMIM-PRBB in the Chembiobank project. <\/p>\n

Among the honoured guests will figure scientists of international renown in fields such as chemistry, biology, chemoinformatics and bioinformatics. They include Alex Levitzki of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Ronald Frank of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Germany, who will deliver the symposium’s opening and closing talks, respectively. <\/p>\n

On 10 and 11 July, Barcelona is set to host the European Chemical Biology Symposium (ECBS 2008), organised jointly by the Barcelona Science Park and the Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar). The purpose of the gathering is to bring together researchers in diverse areas connected to chemical biology to give presentations and take part in debates on lines of research currently underway.
