{"id":45586,"date":"2017-01-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-29T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/salvador-aznar-benitah-receives-the-vi-national-doctores-diz-pintado-cancer-research-prize\/"},"modified":"2020-11-18T14:48:23","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T13:48:23","slug":"salvador-aznar-benitah-receives-the-vi-national-doctores-diz-pintado-cancer-research-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/salvador-aznar-benitah-receives-the-vi-national-doctores-diz-pintado-cancer-research-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Salvador Aznar Benitah receives the VI National &#8216;Doctores Diz Pintado&#8217; Cancer Research Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National &#8216;Doctores Diz Pintado&#8217; Cancer Research Prize, named after the doctors Manuel and Alfonso Diz Pintado, is given by the &#8220;Fundaci\u00f3n de Investigaci\u00f3n del C\u00e1ncer de la Universidad de la Salamanca (FICUS) \u2013 Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n del C\u00e1ncer (CIC)&#8221; with the aim to promote and award the work of young Spanish scientists in oncology research.<\/p>\n<p>The research developed by Salvador Aznar Benitah is mainly basic; however, it pursues clinical application thanks to the combination of several methodologies that allows systematic study of the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour growth. His research group aims to characterize the molecular pathways that regulate the behaviour of normal stem cells during homeostasis and to determine how they become deregulated during carcinogenesis and ageing.\u00a0The award coincides with the\u00a0recent publication of his study\u00a0in\u00a0Nature<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/portal\/ca\/web\/guest\/noticies\/-\/noticia\/not_les-cel-lules-tumorals-depenen-dels-greixos-per-iniciar-metastasi?backURL=%2Fportal%2Fca%2Fel-pcb%23sala-premsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>(<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1038\/nature20791\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">DOI:10.1038\/nature20791<\/a>),\u00a0which has identified the cells responsible for initiating and promoting metastasis in several types of human tumour.<\/p>\n<p>Asked how he felt about the award of the National &#8216;Doctores Diz Pintado&#8217; Cancer Research Prize, Salvador Aznar Benitah said, \u201cit is one of the most prestigious in our country\u201d. And he added, \u201cthis award brings me and my group great happiness. I am very grateful to the members of the jury for having placed their trust in us and for acknowledging our research\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The group leader feels proud to have succeeded in building a group that encourages people to strive, to take their work seriously, to be passionate about it, and to work as a team. &#8220;Most people in the lab don\u2019t stay in it for more than four or five years, but the philosophy of the lab is always the same&#8221;, as Salvador Aznar Benitah highlights.
