It is the most prestigious individual honor, that was officially presented to Salmeron during the recent ESB 2026 conference held in Antwerp, Belgium.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The George Winter Award was established by the ESB to recognise, encourage and stimulate outstanding research contributions to the field of biomaterials. It is granted to researchers who have significantly advanced knowledge in the field through basic, experimental and\/or clinical work, and it is considered the Society\u2019s highest distinction. Since 2025 it has been sponsored by the AO Research Institute Davos.<\/p>\n<p>Salmeron delivered his award lecture during a dedicated session co-chaired by <strong>Cristina Barrias<\/strong> and <strong>Nicholas Dunne<\/strong>.\u00a0\u201cI am honoured to receive this recognition from the European Society for Biomaterials. It is a very special award, one that celebrates excellence and collaborative work in biomaterials. It recognises the work that my talented students and postdocs have delivered consistently over the years, most of it in collaboration with colleagues in the UK, the US, across Europe, and here at IBEC,\u201d stated <strong>Manuel Salmeron<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The director of IBEC also leads the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/research-groups\/microenvironments-for-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microenvironments for medicine<\/a>\u201d research group, focused on biomaterials and mechanobiology. Their main purpose is to engineer the physical and biochemical properties of material microenvironments \u2014 such as viscoelasticity and the presentation of proteins and growth factors \u2014 to control cell behaviour with a view to regenerative medicine applications. The distinction not only recognizes the outstanding scientific career of <strong>Salmeron<\/strong>, but follows a notable institutional precedent: IBEC founder <strong>Josep A. Planell<\/strong> received the George Winter Award in 2013.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>IBEC participation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Several other IBEC researchers also participated in ESB 2026. <strong>Rita Grimalt Mirada<\/strong>, <strong>Xavier Barcel\u00f3 Gallostra<\/strong> and <strong>Anna Vilch\u00e9 Mariscal<\/strong>, all members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/research-groups\/biomaterials-for-neural-regeneration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biomaterials for Neural Regeneration<\/a> research group, will speak respectively in the sessions \u201cCell-Material Interactions and Biointerfaces\u201d, \u201cFrom Bioactive Materials to 3D-Printed Solutions: Advancing Spinal Fusion and Back Pain Therapies\u201d and \u201cBeyond Methacrylates: Advanced Chemistries for Dynamic, Bioactive Hydrogels\u201d. <strong>Anna Puiggal\u00ed Jou<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/research-groups\/biomimetic-systems-for-cell-engineering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biomimetic Systems for Cell Engineering<\/a> research group, will speak in \u201cConverging Towards Mechano-Transduction in Bone-Cartilage Interface\u201d and also will take part in the pre-conference Young Scientist Forum workshop that day. <strong>Esra Kasapgil<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/research-groups\/quasi-living-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quasi-living Materials<\/a> research group, will speak in \u201cPrecision Polymer Chemistry as a Tool to Modulate Biological and Biomedical Functions\u201d. <strong>\u00d3scar Casta\u00f1o Linares<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/research-groups\/biomaterials-for-regenerative-therapies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies<\/a> research group, will chair the session \u201cBeyond Methacrylates: Advanced Chemistries for Dynamic, Bioactive Hydrogels\u201d. <strong>Conrado Aparicio<\/strong>, an associated researcher at IBEC, will also take part in the conference with the talk \u201cBioinspired biomineralized biomaterials with antimicrobial properties for hard tissue regeneration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bb Link to the news: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ibecbarcelona.eu\/manuel-salmeron-receives-the-george-winter-award-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBEC website [+]<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Manuel Salmeron, director and ICREA Research Professor at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), located at the University of Barcelona Science Park, has been awarded with the George Winter&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":112489,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[224,90],"tags":[231],"class_list":["post-112496","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-awards-and-honours","category-entities","tag-ibec-en"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
