{"id":111667,"date":"2026-07-03T12:15:39","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T10:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/ibmb-csic-researcher-elisa-marti-receives-an-erc-advanced-grant-for-spina-bifida-research\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T10:32:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T08:32:25","slug":"ibmb-csic-researcher-elisa-marti-receives-an-erc-advanced-grant-for-spina-bifida-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/ibmb-csic-researcher-elisa-marti-receives-an-erc-advanced-grant-for-spina-bifida-research\/","title":{"rendered":"IBMB-CSIC researcher Elisa Mart\u00ed receives an ERC Advanced Grant for spina bifida research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Elisa Mart\u00ed, a researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-biologia-molecular-de-barcelona-ibmb-csic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBMB-CSIC<\/a>), located at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB-UB), has been awarded one of the nine ERC Advanced Grants granted by the European Research Council (ERC) to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying spina bifida, one of the most common malformations of the nervous system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this call, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) achieved its highest-ever level of funding in this ERC category and became the institution with the largest number of funded projects in Spain.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Unravelling Spina Bifida<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Spina bifida occurs during the early stages of embryonic development and can cause significant neurological after-effects, including partial or total loss of mobility in the legs. Despite decades of research, the mechanisms that cause it remain not fully understood.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>SpinaLogic<\/em> project, led by <strong>Elisa Mart\u00ed<\/strong>, will study how specific genetic mutations identified in spina bifida patients affect the early development of the spinal cord. To do this, the team will introduce these mutations into experimental models of the human spinal cord generated in the laboratory, with the aim of understanding how genetic alterations modify cell behavior during the formation of the neural tube, the embryonic structure that will give rise to the spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p>This approach will make it possible, for the first time, to establish a direct connection between the genetic mutations associated with the disease and the cellular processes that take place during human embryonic development, which will help us better understand how it originates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will test a new hypothesis: that the mobility problems many patients experience could be due, at least in part, to insufficient production of motor neurons during the earliest stages of spinal cord formation,\u201d explains <strong>Mart\u00ed<\/strong>. \u201cConfirming this idea would open new avenues for understanding the after-effects of the disease and, in the future, for exploring possible therapeutic strategies,\u201d the researcher adds.<\/p>\n<p><em>SpinaLogic<\/em> builds on decades of research into the mechanisms that regulate the embryonic development of the spinal cord, carried out mainly in animal models. Thanks to this prior knowledge, the team has developed organoids \u2014small three-dimensional structures obtained from stem cells\u2014 that faithfully reproduce the early stages of human spinal cord development.<\/p>\n<p>Using these organoids, the team will introduce the mutations identified in spina bifida patients to study, for the first time in a human experimental model, the biological basis of this congenital malformation.
