{"id":110280,"date":"2026-04-20T12:34:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T10:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/more-than-500-people-celebrated-irb-barcelonas-20th-anniversary-at-the-international-conference-horizons-of-biomedicine-two-decades-of-discovery\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T12:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T10:34:10","slug":"more-than-500-people-celebrated-irb-barcelonas-20th-anniversary-at-the-international-conference-horizons-of-biomedicine-two-decades-of-discovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/more-than-500-people-celebrated-irb-barcelonas-20th-anniversary-at-the-international-conference-horizons-of-biomedicine-two-decades-of-discovery\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 500 people celebrated IRB Barcelona\u2019s 20th anniversary at the international conference Horizons of Biomedicine: Two Decades of Discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcb.ub.edu\/en\/empresa\/institut-de-recerca-biomedica-irb-barcelona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IRB Barcelona<\/a>), based at the University of Barcelona&#8217;s Scientific Park (PCB-UB), celebrated the institution&#8217;s 20th anniversary this weekend by organising an international scientific conference, Horizons of Biomedicine: Two Decades of Discovery, which brought together more than 500 attendees at the World Trade Center, with world leaders in cancer and ageing research.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the opening session, the Director of IRB Barcelona, <strong>Dr Francesc Posas<\/strong>, reviewed the centre&#8217;s history since its creation in 2005, highlighting its commitment to basic research as a driver of progress in medicine. &#8220;Over these 20 years, IRB Barcelona has become an international benchmark in the research of cancer and other diseases linked to ageing,&#8221; the director stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute currently has 28 research groups and 9 scientific platforms, and over its history more than 2,800 people have been part of its community.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First-rate science and new generations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The scientific programme brought together international leaders in biomedical research such as <strong>Joan Massagu\u00e9<\/strong>, <strong>Hans Clevers<\/strong>, <strong>Johanna Joyce<\/strong>, <strong>Scott Lowe<\/strong>, <strong>Marian Walhout<\/strong>, <strong>Brenda Andrews<\/strong>, <strong>Luke O&#8217;Neill<\/strong> and <strong>John Dick<\/strong>. Throughout the conference, they addressed some of the major current challenges in the field, from cancer biology and metastasis to metabolism, immunology and gene regulation.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting also placed special emphasis on the new generations of scientists, with short presentations from young researchers who shared the stage with international leaders.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A very special celebration<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Beyond the scientific programme, the event culminated on Friday with a celebration with the IRB Barcelona community, which highlights the Institute&#8217;s track record and its impact.<\/p>\n<p>The event included a performance by the singer <strong>Meritxell Nederman<\/strong> and a sand art piece, which offered a visual and poetic journey through the history of science.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, testimonies were also collected from people connected to IRB Barcelona, including one of its founders, <strong>Dr Joan Massagu\u00e9<\/strong>; a metastatic breast cancer patient,<strong> Pilar Ros<\/strong>; the Executive Patron of the Manuel Lao Foundation, <strong>Clara Camp\u00e1s<\/strong>; and a venture capital manager from ASABYS.<\/p>\n<p>Next, the pastry chef <strong>Oriol Balagu\u00e9<\/strong> publicly presented a cake created especially for the occasion, and the celebration concluded with a performance by the Jove de Barcelona human tower team, who, with the help of the entire community, built a human tower.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), based at the University of Barcelona&#8217;s Scientific Park (PCB-UB), celebrated the institution&#8217;s 20th anniversary this weekend by organising an international scientific conference,&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":110275,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[90],"tags":[260],"class_list":["post-110280","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-entities","tag-irb-en"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
