The XI International Congress of Obesity has awarded an IBUB research project

The XI International Congress of Obesity held in Stockholm in July 2010 selected as one of the best 5 communications the research on FGF21 conducted by Francesc Villarroya, head professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Barcelona (UB) and member of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB), located at the Barcelona Science Park. Last March, Cell Metabolism, the journal with the highest scientific impact factor on metabolism, dedicated a cover story to this same research project.

The International Congress of Obesity, held every four years, gathered in the last July edition, experts in endocrinology from all over to discuss the advances and studies in the fight against obesity. The research led by professor Villarroya was selected among 1,200 other projects from all around the word. Specifically, professor Villarroya´s research was considered the best communication in the field of experimental medicine and physiology, one of the five classification areas for presented communications. The award-winning study was carried out using newborn mice and could open new therapeutic targets for combating obesity with the fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a factor secreted by the liver in response to fats in the diet.
