The UB maintains its position as the first university of the Spanish State in the «Academic Ranking of World Universities» 2010, an annual report published by the Center for World-Class Universities and the Institute of Higher Education at the Jiao Tong University of Shangai (China). Specifically, the University of Barcelona is in the group of universities falling between positions 201 and 300. Last year the UB succeeded in being among the first 200 universities in the word, whilst this year no Spanish university has been classified in this interval. The UB is, on the other hand, one of the top100 world universities in clinical medicine and pharmacy according to the ARWU ranking. The University of Barcelona is the only university of the Spanish State listed in these top 100 universities in clinical medicine and pharmacy.

The methodology of the «Academic Ranking of World Universities» 2010 includes the analysis of bibliometric data in six different indicators: the number of relevant awards (Nobel, Fields medal) achieved by the alumni and the academic staff of the universities, where the UB obtains a score of 0; the most cited researchers in the 21 research areas established by the Thomson ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), where the UB obtains a score of 7.2; the papers published in Nature and Science, where the UB obtains a score of 14; the papers included in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), where the UB obtains a score of 51.4; and lastly, academic efficiency based on the dimensions of the institution, where the UB obtains a score of 15.9.
