The PCB invites everyone to conduct research

On Saturday November 6 started the 5th edition of "Do Research!", a series of workshops open to the general public. These workshops are organised by the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) with the support of the Social Welfare programme of the CatalunyaCaixa . Its aim is to show the scientific methodology and research that is currently being conducted at PCB laboratories and the University of Barcelona, as well as to improve the scientific culture of citizens and foster vocations amongst the youth.

This event is free and will take place at the Pedrera of CatalunyaCaixa (Passeig de Gracia, 92) on Saturday from 11 am to 1 pm from November 6 to December 18 and will also be offered to the academic and school community during the week at the OpenLAB of the Barcelona Science Park (C/Baldiri Reixac, 4). In both cases it is necessary to make prior reservations due to the limited number of spots available.

This is a unique experience in the city given that the researchers themselves move part of their laboratory and the equipment they frequently use to the workshops to show their work live and invite the general public to perform experiments that are part of their current research.

Although this event is aimed especially at young people, it is open to all citizens and everyone is invited to participate alone, with friends or with family. It is estimated that overall, 1,500 people will be able to “be researchers” throughout the course of this new series of workshops.

Participants are free to choose any topic for the workshop. There are five different proposals: from analysing several DNA samples to determine who has been the perpetrator of a crime or elaborate a new drug which could be useful to treat Alzheimer’s, to studying a population of flies with cancer to discover the mechanisms that trigger this disease and gain deeper knowledge about the different phases that constitute the development process of a new drug. Participants will also have the chance to evaluate the efficacy of the different potential drugs to treat diabetes.
