The Barcelona Science Park brings science closer to young people at the 19th edition of the Festa de la Ciència de Barcelona

The Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB-UB) was one of the key participants in the 19th edition of the Festa de la Ciència de Barcelona, held on April 18 and 19 at El Born. Museu d’Història de Barcelona and Plaça Comercial. The event, one of the city’s leading celebrations of scientific culture, brought together thousands of visitors around an open and participatory programme.

Among the more than 120 institutions, organisations and research groups taking part in the programme of activities, the Parc Científic de Barcelona, within the framework of its science outreach programme RESSÒ – Recerca en Societat, organised an educational escape room that brought together around 30 participants, most of them children aged between 8 and 14. The activity posed a clear challenge: to prevent female talent from “escaping” the field of research. To achieve this, the teams had to solve challenges inspired by leading women scientists such as Lise Meitner, Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze, Katalin Karikó, Lynn Margulis and Josefina Castellví. Finally, all the groups managed to overcome the final challenge at the scientific careers control centre.

In addition, different entities from the scientific community linked to the Parc Científic de Barcelona and the Universitat de Barcelona actively took part in the event. Institutions such as the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the University of Barcelona, IDIBAPS and the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) offered science outreach talks and workshops. The public was able to discover advances in nanoscience and photopharmaceuticals, take part in activities on neuroscience and bioengineering, and enjoy immersive experiences such as virtual walks through the galaxy or demonstrations to “listen” to the Universe.

Organised by the Barcelona City Council, this edition of the festival featured more than 180 activities. In total, over 350 participants helped bring science closer to the public, consolidating the Festa de la Ciència as a key meeting point between research and society.
