The Barcelona Science Park and the Cité de la Biotech of Quebec join forces to promote the biotechnology sector

The Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and the of Quebec (Canada) have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly promote research projects and managerial activities that are carried out in the area of biotechnology in their respective areas of influence. The agreement was signed by Fernando Albericio, director general of the PCB, and Robert A. Dubé, president of the Biotech City, in the framework of the XXIV World Conference of the International Association of Science and Technology Parks celebrated in Barcelona.

The project of cooperation aims to foment collaboration between the two centers in order to promote mutual interchange of information in different interest areas, such as, for example: companies that desire to extend their activities in Europe or in North America, regional or state programs that give support to companies and industrial research projects in the biotechnology sector, and the development of relevant projects that are being carried out in these centers in the area of nanobioengineering or applied technologies in biomedicine.

Thus, both entities agree to make public the profile of the business areas present in their centers and the patents applied for, to promote the creation of societies that work together, as well as advancing information on the Catalan companies and those of Quebec that participate in international events, such as trade fairs and congresses, to promote the establishment of possible associations or agreements of collaboration between them.

Other aims outlined in the project of cooperation are: promoting participation in activities that are realized in the field of biotechnology in the two regions, such as the trade fairs Expoquimia or BioSpain, which are celebrated in Barcelona, or Biomedex (Montreal) and BioContact (Quebec); reinforcing the presence and information on the activities of the two centers in their respective web pages; offering facilities to visit and receive information on the companies located in the two regions, as well as planning meetings to determine future initiatives throughout the course of other events.

This project of cooperation reinforces the good relationship that already existed between the PCB and the Cité de la Biotech since 2003, when the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Center for Innovation and Business Development (Centre d’Innovació i Desenvolupament Empresarial: CIDEM) and the Quebec Biotechnology Innovation Center (QBIC) signed an agreement of collaboration to promote the links between the CIDEM-PCB Bioincubator of the Barcelona Park and the QBIC. In regard to this collaboration, the PCB christened one of the conference rooms with the name of the “Sala Laval”, in reference to the city where the Cité de la Biotech is located.
