The Barcelona City Council recognizes the city’s universities that are honored as CIEs

Yesterday November 9, a ceremony in recognition of universities that are distinguished by the Ministry of Education with the title of Campus of International Excellence (CIE) was held in the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Council. The event was attended by general secretary of Universities of the Ministry of Education, Màrius Rubiralta and the rectors of the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the Pompeu Fabra University. The Barcelona Science Park is part of the ‘Barcelona Knowledge Campus', one of the projects that has obtained this recognition, which is jointly promoted by the UB and the UPC.

During the event, the mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, announced that one year ago the Barcelona City Council, through its Economic Promotion Sector, started working on the creation of a higher education cluster that will be completed in 2011. The cluster will comprise public and private universities, university foundations, business schools, specialised interuniversity platforms and specialised centers.

The Higher Education cluster of Barcelona is one of the proposals included in the Barcelona 2020 Strategic Metropolitan Plan, and aims to be a worldwide reference point in the field of postgraduate higher education, contributing to the international scope of Barcelona and its capacities and to attracting talent, but also reinforcing higher education as a strategic economic sector.

In the 2010 call, the Ministry of Education has recognized the Health University of Barcelona Campus (HUBc), the UPC’s ENERGIA Campus and the UPF Campus-Icaria International as campuses of international excellence.
