Symposium TAU-IBEC: Moving towards the transfer of knowledge between Catalonia and Israel

This week, researchers from IBEC and Tel Aviv University (TAU) came together for a joint symposium supported by the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) through the Joint Symposia (SymIL) grants. This call is part of the Catalonia-Israel TWINS Programme which will be developed over a period of two years (2014-2015) to promote networking through events around a specific scientific topic of interest, to explore, develop, strengthen, and exchange knowledge that leads to future scientific collaborations.

Lluís Rovira, Director of the Catalan Research Centres Institute (CERCA Institute) inaugurated the event –entitled Nanobiotechnology and Nanomedicine: Moving forward the convergence between life sciences, medicine and engineering at the nanoscale– at which group leaders from both sides have presented their work and try to identify synergies and opportunities for collaboration, including Ehud Gazit, Chief Scientist of Israel’s Ministry of Science and Technology until 2014, and IBEC Director Josep Samitier.

In November 2013, the Government of Catalonia and three Israeli higher education and research institutions signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the possibilities of scientific and academic collaboration in a number of fields. One outcome of this declaration was the starting up of a joint Catalonia–Israel programme: TWINS (ToWards INterrelations in Science), which will be implemented over the course of two years (2014-2015) on the basis of joint actions, such as the holding of joint symposia on matters of common interest, to act as a seedbed for future partnerships and research staff exchange projects.
