Research awards of the Fundació La Marató de TV3 ceremony

On Monday 5th November, the Foundation La Marató de TV3 gave more than 8 million euros collected during the 2011 La Marató to 56 researchers in charge of 29 research projects on regeneration and transplant of organs and tissues. The Foundation has awarded a €300,000 grant to IRB Barcelona's Colorectal Cancer lab, led by ICREA researcher Eduard Batlle, and the group of Azucena Salas from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, allowing them to the potential of the transplantation of intestinal stem cells to treat lesions caused by inflammatory bowel diseases.


The award ceremony took place in the Historic Building of the UB and was presented by the journalists Xavi Coral and Espartac Peran, presenters of the 2011 edition of La Marató de TV3. In the event participated the Health regional minister, Boi Ruiz; the rector of the UB, Dídac Ramírez, and the president of the Catalan Broadcasting Corporation and the Foundation La Marató de TV·, Brauli Duart.

Out of the 29 projects which will be funded, 8 are unitary and 21 are coordinated by two or three different research institutes. This kind of collaboration agreements foster the co-working between Catalan research institutes, and Spanish and international ones. Within the UB’s institutes and research groups,10 projects will be funded. These projects are carried out by the Faculty of Medicine, the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and the University Hospital of Bellvitge, all of them affiliated centres with the campus of international excellence of the UB, the HUBc, as well as with the Institute for Research in Biomedicine of Barcelona (IRB Barcelona).
