The Institute of Research on Biodiversity (IRBio) of the UB –located at the Barcelona Science Park-, will be presented on October 22 at the Aula Magna of the School of Biology in a ceremony presided by Dídac Ramirez, rector of the UB. The primary objectives of this institute are to boost research to improve the understanding of biodiversity and sustainable development and to promote both basic and applied multidisciplinary scientific research of excellence in this area of knowledge.

The presentation will be conducted by Carles Ribera, professor of the Department of Animal Biology of the UB and director of the IRBio, and will be attended by Alex Aguilar, the vice-chancellor for Innovation and Knowledge Transfer, Martí Domènech i Montagut, the coordinator of the Area of Natural Spaces of the Barcelona City Council, and Joan Roca, the general director of Research of the Department of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise of the Generalitat de Catalunya, amongst others.

The new Institute of Research on Biodiversity of the UB will help address the future challenges of the new millennium to reconcile demographic growth and unstoppable urban and industrial development with the conservation of the natural environment. IRBio is comprised of 55 researchers from eight departments of different university schools: Biology (Animal Biology; Genetics; Vegetable Biology; Microbiology and Ecology), Pharmacy (Natural Products, Vegetable Biology and Edaphology; and Health Microbiology and Parasitology) and Geology (Stratigraphy, Paleontology and Marine Geosciences).
