ODISSeA: a pioneer initiative to improve organ donation in Southeast Asian countries

Promoting highly specialized training for experts in the field of organ donation in Southeast Asian countries is the main aim of the training program Train the trainers, to take place from May 13 to 17 in Barcelona, under the direction of Martí Manyalich, lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and president of the DTI Foundation – Donation & Transplantation Institute, located in the Barcelona Science Park. This training initiative for physicians is part of the ODISSeA project and will finish with an institutional ceremony to take place in the Aula Magna at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB on Friday, May 17.

 

ODISSeA (Organ Donation Innovative Strategies in Southeast Asia) is an Erasmus+ project, co-funded by the European Commission, to develop and implement a postgraduate programme on organ donation for health professionals in eight universities in Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand.

The donation rate does not even reach one donor for every million inhabitants in some countries of Southeast Asia. This training approach –adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) –will promote the institutional collaboration required to improve donation rates and set a sustainable higher education program on organ donation in these Southeast Asian Universities.

This pioneer initiative is led by the University of Barcelona alongside University of Bologna (Italy), the University of Zagreb (Croatia), DTI Foundation and Dinamia (Spain).  

ODISSeA started its journey in January 2019, followed by the kick-off meeting held in March in the city of Davao (Philippines). Therefore, thirty experts from Philippines, Malaysia and Myanmar, participants in Train the Trainers face-to-face course in Barcelona, will acquire the knowledge and competences to become trainers in the first Postgraduate Programme in organ donation in their own universities.
