Nuno Costa-Borges, co-founder and scientific director of Embryotools: “The Science Park has played a key role for us, especially thanks to access to the animal facility”

The biotechnology centre Embryotools, based at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has a solid scientific track record spanning more than 30 years of experience and state-of-the-art laboratories, enabling it to offer advanced reproductive solutions to breeders around the world, both to address infertility cases and to optimize reproduction in high-performance horses. The combination of cutting-edge science with practical clinical and veterinary applications has established the center as an international benchmark in both human and animal reproduction.

Along these lines, Embryotools develops several innovation projects aimed at improving oocyte quality, a key factor in increasing the success of assisted reproduction treatments. Through this research, the center seeks to optimize reproductive outcomes and continue contributing advances applicable to both the human and veterinary fields. For the past 10 years, the laboratory has led the development of mitochondrial replacement therapies, applying innovative technologies to address complex cases of infertility and hereditary diseases. Recently, the company achieved the birth of the world’s first foal through maternal spindle transfer, an advanced assisted reproduction technique effective against infertility that allows the preservation and transmission of the DNA of competition horses.

“The Science Park has been key for us because it provided a range of services that are essential for companies when they are growing. In our particular case, since we work with animal models, the animal facility is crucial, and over the years we have had the opportunity to learn and help improve this service, which has been fundamental for us,” explains Dr. Nuno Costa-Borges, co-founder and scientific director of Embryotools, in this interview conducted during the latest edition of the Coffee Connection meeting.
