Meteosim wins the Senén Vilaró award for the best innovative company

and its daughter company , located in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), have won the Senén Vilaró Award for the best innovative company, for identifying a new market opportunity and developing an innovative service. The award ceremony took place on 11 December at 1900 hours in the Aula Magna great hall of the University of Barcelona (UB) (located at: Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 585). The ceremony was presided over by the rector of the University of Barcelona, Dídac Ramírez, and M.Carmen Verdaguer, General Director of The Fundació Bosch i Gimpera. The Spanish Secretary for Universities, Màrius Rubiralta, and the General Director of Barcelona Science Park, Fernando Albericio, were also present at the event.

The Senén Vilaró Award, which is accompanied by 10,000 euros, was created this year by the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBiG) and the Board of Trustees of the University of Barcelona. The award aims to proportion recognition for innovative capacity that has been developed by an entity or a company linked to the Group UB.

Meteosim SL, which is advised by the FBiG, is a UB spin-off which specialises in modelling the atmosphere and numerical weather prediction (NWP). It offers answers to companies that are particularly sensitive to the weather. The company was founded in 2003 by researchers from the Department of Astronomy and Meteorology at the UB, and the American company Meso Inc. Currently Meteosim carries out more than 100 weather simulations daily, spread over the entire globe. It uses different configurations and resolutions depending on the requirements of the client.

Meteosim Truewind SL, managed by Joan Aymamí and created in 2007, is a joint-venture between Meteosim SL and the American consultants AWS TrueWind LLC. It specialises in renewable energy consultancy. Its clients include Iberdrola, Acciona, Endesa, Gamesa, the World Bank and many governments and energy agencies. One of its latest projects involved drawing up a report on wind resources in Peru so that this clean and renewable form of energy can be put to good use in Peru. It has also produced wind atlases for other countries such as Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and China.

Meteosim was founded by researchers from the Department of Astronomy and Meteorology at the University of Barcelona: José Vidal, Bernat Codina, Santi Parés and Joan Aymamí. Together with the American company Meso Inc. it has a team of 15 staff from different fields of research (physics, mathematics and engineering). Its turnover is set to reach nearly 3 million euros this year. In 2009, Meteosim aims to reach € 4.5M and create 10 new positions on its staff.

The creation of the Senén Vilaró award coincides with the start of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the FBiG. Against the same background of this celebration and together with the Board of Trustees of the UB, the FBiG also created the Antoni Caparrós award this year for the best knowledge transfer project. The winner of this prize was the researcher Albert Cirera, from the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Barcelona, for his project, “Simulation and Modelling of Gas Sensors.”
