Metasbio sets up a branch office at the Barcelona Science Park to broaden its activity in Spain

The company Metasbio, which offers business consulting services related with innovation in the field of life sciences, has recently opened a new office at the Barcelona Science Park with the intention of boosting and extending its activity in Spain. To achieve this objective, its team of professionals, boasting more than 10 years experience in the biopharmaceutical and finance sectors, enable it to provide its clients with strong national and international networking. The company is managed by two partners, Stuart Medina, who manages the company from Madrid, and Fermín Goytisolo, who is in charge of the Barcelona office at the PCB.

The company initiated its activity in 2003, coinciding with the boost of the biotechnological sector in Spain in an environment that favoured the growth of R+D. The operations it has carried out in the last few years include consulting on capital increases (spin out Digna Biotech, Lactest), the launching of biotechnological start-ups: Immed and ProRetin Therapeutics, dedicated to the development of new biological compounds for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and therapies for neurodegenerative diseases of the retina, respectively, and the due diligence of the Crystax company as a result of its acquisition by the biotech Oryzon Genomics, an operation that has entailed the creation of one of the main biotechs in Spain. Its clients also include GalChimia, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Clave Mayor, CAN and the Marcelino Botín Foundation.

In the next few years, the company aims to become a reference consultant in its sector and contribute to the transfer of knowledge and technology and to the development of business opportunities based on the commercial exploitation of the results derived from medical and biotechnological research conducted in our country, taking advantage of the surge that the sector is currently experiencing. According to Fermin Goytisolo, the opening of this new office at the Barcelona Science Park is in response to the fact that it is “the adequate environment to boost its activity in Catalonia and because it is a strategic centre and the reference point in biotechnology in Spain”.

Stuart Medina has a degree in Business Science (Complutense University of Madrid) and an MBA from the Darden School (University of Virginia). He was the head of management control at Union Fenosa and Finance Director of Genzyme’s subsidiary in Spain.

Fermín Goytisolo has a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from the Business Institute in Madrid. He has held the position of Licensing Manager at Esteve, Director of Biotechnology at Najeti and researcher of the Department of Immunology and Oncology funded by Pharmacy at the Spanish National Centre of Biotechnology.
