IBEC and IRB Barcelona are awarded funding from the Spanish Association Against Cancer

Yesterday, coinciding with World Cancer Research Day (WCRD), which takes place on 24 September each year, theSpanish Association Against Cancer (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, AECC) celebrated the 2018 AECC Cancer Research Grants awards ceremony. Among the proposals selected are two projects from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and five from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), which is based at PCB.

 

The two IBEC researchers who were awarded the AECC grants are Aranzazu Villasante, in the AECC Researchers category, for work on biomimetic models to investigate the resistance of tumours to different therapies that will be conducted in the Josep Samitier nanobioengineering group; and Nuria Montserrat, in the AECC LAB category, who will collaborate on a multidisciplinary project with researchers and clinics in the Valle d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, ICO-IDIBELL (Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research) and Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, to identify renal carcinoma markers.

The researchers at IRB Barcelona who were awarded the AECC grants are: Eduard BatlleAngel R. Nebreda and Francesc Posas, in the AECC Projects category, whose studies are focused, respectively, on colon cancer, melanoma and breast cancer; Roger Gomis, in the AECC Translational Coordinated Groups category, who is working on a translational project on resistance and metastasis in prostate cancer coordinated by Arkaitz Carracedo in CIC bioGUNE (Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences); and Marta Kovatcheva, in the AECC Postdoc category, who is studying how to prevent lung cancer from recurring after therapy at the Manuel Serrano laboratory.
