Generalitat Councilor Huguet presents the Declaration of Barcelona about Science and Technology Parks

In the framework of the XXIV World Conference of the International Association of Science and Technology Parks (IASP), the Councilor of Innovation, Universities and Business of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Josep Huguet, presented the , a declaration on Science and Technology Parks. The document remarks on "the importance of public policies of support for the Science and Technology Parks as central focal points of the system of innovation, business development, and territorial rebalancing".

The presentation of this document, which was jointly agreed by the representatives of the IASP, took place during the gala dinner offered on Tuesday, 3 July, at the Royal Shipyards of Barcelona, before an audience of notables linked to the management of science and technology parks, such as the Rector of the Universitat de Barcelona and president of the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB), Marius Rubiralta; the director general of the PCB, Fernando Albericio; the delegate of the president of the PCB and vice-president of the IASP, Joan Bellavista, and the president of the Association of Spanish Science and Technology Parks (APTE) Felipe Romera, among many others.

The Declaració de Barcelona was signed by those attending the XXIV Conference of the IASP, which has united more than 800 representatives from 67 countries and wishes to send a “clear message to the public administrations and other agents that intervene in the taking of decisions”, said Huguet, who also expressed the compromise of the Catalan government to put this into practice. “Reinforcing the role of the Science and Technology Parks in the Catalan system of research and innovation will be a fundamental axis of action in the generation of environments of innovation”, the councilor added.

In addition to underscoring the need of public support policies, the document highlights the system of operation of the Parks in local and international networks that has enabled “a shared apprenticeship system for managing the complexity of all the elements of the system of innovation and development that are integrated within the Parks”, as well as the contribution of these centers to the development of the territory, the breaking down of knowledge borders, the creation of specialized work places and the international mobility of expert and professional personnel in many environments of knowledge and technology.

Along with the persons just cited as attending the gala dinner, those who signed the Declaració de Barcelona include, among others: the president of the IASP, Chachanat Thebtaranonth; Jane Davies, European president of the IASP; Josep Miquel Piqué, president of the Network of Science and Technology Parks XPCAT (Xarxa de Parcs Científics i Tecnològics de Catalunya), and Manuel Royes, Special Delegate of the State and president of the Executive Committee of the Consortium of the Zona Franca of Barcelona.
