FOTORECERCA’08 Prize-Winners Announced

Winners of the first annual science photography competition , sponsored by the PCB, have been announced this week. The two winners are researchers Arnau Sebé Pedròs of the Department of Genetics at the UB, who received first prize for his photograph of a marine protist, entitled "Multicel·lularitat"; ", and Maria Marsal Terés, of the Barcelona Institute of Molecular Biology (IBMB-CSIC), who won honourable mention for her image of a zebra fish embryo.

The prize-giving ceremony took place on Monday 1 December. The selection of winners was made by a multidisciplinary panel of judges made up of representatives of the PCB and specialists in the science press, graphic design, and photography, who reached their decision from a short list of eight images. The judges chose the two eventual winners by voting and their decision was unanimous. Originality, artistic and technical quality, visual impact and scientific content were the factors guiding the judges’ decision.

A total of 29 photographs were submitted. All were taken by personnel connected to the research institutes, companies, technology platforms and other institutions based at the Barcelona Science Park, such as the Institute for Biomedical Research (IRB Barcelona), the Bioengineering Institute of Catalonia, the Barcelona Institute of Molecular Biology (IBMB-CSIC), the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit (UTOX), the Nanotechnology Platform, the Sabater Pi Collection and Documentation Centre, as well as researchers with the University of Barcelona.

The panel of judges included Fernando Albericio, PCB Director General; Roser Artal, PCB Managing Director; Rosina Malagrida, PCB Director of Communication; Anna Calderer, who runs the programme on scientific dissemination “Research in Society”; Jesús Purroy, project manager of the PCB’s Science Directorate; and Mariana Eidler, director of Tàctica 42, a graphic design and photographic agency.

The prize-winning photos and all the other photos entered into competition can be seen on the plasma screen set up in the reception area of the Modular Building.
