Adaia Flotats, winner of PCB Award at Exporecerca, ranks third in the grand final

Adaia Flotats i Boix, a year high school student at Escola Arrels and winner of the Barcelona Science Park Prize at the XXII edition of Exporecerca Jove, finished third at this international fair, where secondary school students from all over the world can present their research projects. The event, organized annually by MAGMA association, aims to promote the exchange of experiences and knowledge among young people from all over the world.

This year, due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19,  the Exporecerca Jove was celebrated in two phases: a first online phase, hold the 27th and 28th February 2020, from where the 20 finalist projects was selected to participate in the Final Phase, which took place face-to-face the 27th and 28th of March of 2020.

Adaia’s work “A research where the implications of living in the UK oro Spain and suffering from lupus disease”, compares the medical, human and social aspects of lupus, a systemic autoimmune disease, in two European countries: Spain and the United Kingdom. To do that, Adaia conducted surveys and interviews with patients and their families, medical specialists and members of the boards of the British and Spanish patient associations.

In the online phase, the works presented were evaluated by a jury and Adaia received the Barcelona Science Park Award, which consists of participating in an Do research! workshop of this Research in Society program, and a guided tour of the Park. In addition, Adaia was also awarded the Catalan Pedagogy Society Award, and was among the 20 finalists who were able to present her work to the final phase.

This last phase took place at the Casino L’Aliança del Poblenou on March 26 and 27, and Adaia won the 3rd Exporecerca Jove Award. This prize participation, with expenses paid, in I-FEST²The International Festival of Engineering Science and Technology, which will take place in Tunis in 2021.
