Biocat, recognized as United Kingdom’s best Spanish business partner

The Department for International Trade of the UK Embassy to Spain awarded Biocat with the “Collaboration and Partnership in Business Award for best Spanish collaborator“. The organization, that coordinates and promotes the healthcare and life sciences sector in Catalonia, is headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park.

The award was presented at the second annual UK-Spain Business Awards ceremony, held virtually on March 10. In total, 14 awards were given out in seven categories.

Biocat CEO Jordi Naval spoke live to thank the DIT for the award on behalf of the whole organization and expressed its desire to continue establishing good relations between the two regions. Naval also explained Biocat’s mission to dynamize all the stakeholders in the BioRegion (companies, research groups and bodies, hospitals and innovation support structures) and highlighted that, despite the pandemic, the BioRegion was able to raise twice as much funding as in previous years.

The event also featured authorities from both countries. British Ambassador Hugh Elliot highlighted the close relationship that persists between the two regions, despite Brexit. For her part, Secretary of State for Trade Xiana Méndez encouraged everyone to not only maintain the level of trade but to step it up.

A partnership agreement with Barcelona Health Hub

Biocat and Barcelona Health Hub have just signed a partnership agreement to promote the digital health ecosystem in Catalonia. The two organizations want to enhance the opportunities created around technical and scientific advances, as well as improve the digital health transfer in the sector.

Thus, Biocat is joining one of the leading tech hubs that emerged in the city in recent years as an “ecosystem partner” to promote and facilitate activities particularly related to digital health, one of the sectors with the most potential for growth in the BioRegion, as stated in the BioRegion 2020 Report.

The life sciences and healthcare ecosystem in Catalonia has undergone a major acceleration in startups in this subsector in the past ten years, as well as the amount of investment raised. By the close of the Report in 2020, investment had multiplied x2.6 since 2018, going from €13.1M to €34.5M in 2020, making it the subsector that is growing at the quickest rate.
