Application process of d·HEALTH Barcelona 2016 is already open

Design Health Barcelona (d·HEALTH Barcelona) is a unique 9-month groundbreaking training program to boost innovation, in which real hospital needs become the foundation for new technology to improve the quality of patient care. Inspired in the prestigious Stanford Biodesign FellowshipKaos Pilot and Exponential Medicine (Singularity University), d·HEALTH Barcelona is the flagship program of Moebio, Biocat’s new commitment to developing entrepreneurial talent in the health and life sciences sector. Application process of d·HEALTH Barcelona 2016 is already open. The Parc Científic de Barcelona will host an informative sessions to present the 3rd edition of the program.

d·HEALTH Barcelona seeks postgraduates in PhD’s in Health, Bio, Tech, Business, Engineering and Design who want to make a change in their careers and pursue entrepreneurship in the health sector. During nine months, selected fellows will work in multidisciplinary teams to develop the real solutions in medical technologies the society demands. Throughout the program, fellows will receive an intensive introduction to the clinical field to become experts on the chosen specialty area, will learn how to build a viable business and will receive training in areas such as design thinking or creative leadership through a series of classes and workshops taught by over 50 international experts.

After an initial training period of 5 weeks (bootcamp), selected fellows get immersed in the daily routine of a top hospital of Barcelona during two months to detect real and unmet needs (Identify). Then, fellows design, prototype (Invent) and implement a new product or service to solve one of the needs identified during the clinical immersion (Implement). At the end of the program, they will pitch their innovations to a panel of investors to get the funding to implement them (Investor’s Day).

Biodesign: innovation’s engine in healthcare

In recent years, our knowledge in life sciences has increased exponentially and technology has become increasingly complex. At the same time, providing quality health care has become more difficult and expensive. There are many medical needs, some obvious and others that have not been identified even by the people closest to them. Innovation in healthcare offers huge opportunities for entrepreneurs, but is also a challenging field that requires new, interdisciplinary approaches.

usMIMA, a start-up that is working on a solution to reduce chronic constipation in people with spinal cord injury or neurological diseases, is the first healthcare company come out from d·HEALTH Barcelona. The team, which spent its clinical immersion at the Institut Guttmann, found that bowel dysfunction because of a lack of propulsion in the colon, is a huge medical and social problem that negatively affects the quality of life of these patients. It pushes them to take laxatives daily and even to use invasive methods to ensure the evacuation. The device USMIMA is developing is a non-drug, non-invasive solution without adverse effects.
