An active substance from Biocontrol Technologies to control plant diseases has been accepted by the EU

The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health of the EU accepted the proposal of the European Commission for including the new biological active substance T. Asperellum, strain T-34, developed by the UB's spin-off Biocontrol Technologies, in the annex I of the Regulation (EC) 1107/2009, authorising then the sale of the product in all the members states of the European Union. This substance fights against nine new common plant diseases; its inclusion will awake a great economic interest and allow Biocontrol Technologies to extend its market.

The stricter regulation to achieve the sustainable use of pesticides (Regulation EC 1107/2009 and Directive 2009/118/EC), which states the progressive elimination of noxious substances in order to reduce their impacts on human health and the environment, is an opportunity to get into the biological control agents’ market (an alternative to the use of chemical products) to control plant pests and diseases.

Biocontrol Technologies, SL is the first Catalan and Spanish company which has carry out all the development process of a biological control agent: from its isolation (1998-2000), to patent (2002), and commercialisation, in 2011 in the United States and Canada, and now in Europe. This spin-off of the University of Barcelona, located at the Bioincubator of the Barcelona Science Park of the UB, is specialized in the isolation, the development and production of natural microorganisms for using them as biological control agents against plant diseases.
