Acknowledgement of Leitat’s environmental conservation efforts

Last Wednesday November 17, within the framework of the 2010 Catalonia EMAS awards ceremony (third edition), Francesc Baltasar, minister of Environment and Housing of the Generalitat de Catalonia, recognized the Leitat Technological Center's 10-year adherence to the environmental management and audit community system (EMAS). The ceremony was held to recognize the activities that EMAS organizations conduct to protect the environment and environmental quality.

EMAS is the acronym for Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, a voluntary management tool aimed at companies and entities that wish to assess, improve and disseminate their environmental behaviour. EMAS organizations are recognized by the European Union by means of a logotype that guarantees the veracity of the environmental information provided.

“Leitat, which has adhered to the EMAS for 10 years, continues to promote the ongoing improvement of its environmental behaviour and society in general. This control over the environmental improvements generated by its activity enables mid- and long-term cost savings that directly affect society with fewer emissions and residues, amongst others. In addition, the environment is one of the 3 pillars on which Leitat bases its strategy in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Its latest contribution has been the inauguration of its new, more sustainably built headquarters”, explains Olga Bonastre, director of Leitat’s Integrated Management Systems.

LEITAT is a Technological Center, member of TECNIO and recognized by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which aims to collaborate with companies and institutions, adding technological value both to products and to processes, and which focuses its activities on research, development and industrial development (R+D+2i).

The members of Leitat’s Biomed Division, located at the Barcelona Science Park, have over 15 years experience in biomedical research in the field of oncology, developed at Merck KGaA, a multinational pharmaceutical company. The Biomed Division’s basic objective is to generate new and innovative drugs for cancer treatment, including the following as targets: the tumour cells themselves, stromal cells, tumour angiogenesis and cancer stem cells.
