Alliance between three Biomedical Research institutions in Barcelona

The Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) (August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Insitute), the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB-UB) (Barcelona Science Park), and the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB)(Barcelona Biomedical Research Park) have signed the . This initiative aims to organize and strengthen the quality and capacity of public biomedical research carried out in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, at a time when Barcelona is projected as a setting of excellence in biomedical research.

Open to the incorporation of other institutions and based on a multicentre and highly coordinated model, this new affiliation is foreseen in the objectives of the new policy of the European Research and Innovation Area. One of these objectives is to create regional settings of scientific and technological excellence, especially in biomedicine and biotechnology.

The Alliance aims to act as an intermediary between the signatory institutions, and to participate, with other private and public agents and entities, in setting up a powerful focus for biomedicine and biotechnology in Barcelona (Bio-cluster BCN). The Alliance is, therefore, a step towards the efficient and sustainable management of existing scientific-technological resources and the organization of research groups and programmes. Thus, this agreement will facilitate the international competitiveness of the biomedical research carried out in Barcelona.

After signing the Alliance agreement, the President of the IDIBAPS, Joaquim Casal (Director General for Research, of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia), Andreu Mas-Colell, in his capacity of President of the PRBB, and the President of the PCB-UB and Rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Tugores, signed a second agreement with the Minister of Science and Technology, Josep Piqué, and the Minister for Universities, Research and the Information Society, Andreu Mas-Colell, to support the development of this Alliance.

In this second agreement, the signatory institutions formally accorded to draw up a Viability and Objectives Plan (2003-2005), which covers the strategic process of integration, while the two Ministries guarantee to provide specific special actions and sufficient yearly funds to cover the objectives set out by the Alliance.
