Biomedical and Biotechnological Research

Among the scientific areas in which the PCB works, special mention is given to biomedical and biotech investigation performed at the Institute of Biomedical Research of the PCB (IRB-PCB), the “Institut de Biologia Molecular de Barcelona” (IBMB-CSIC), the Nanobioengineering Research Laboratory (CREBEC), the Centre for Research in Theoretical Chemistry (CeRQT) and the Cognitive Neuroscience Research Group (GRNC). Research activities in these fields are also developed in enterprises and spin-offs from the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and fine chemistry industries.

As the largest research centre of the Park, the IRB-PCB brings together 15 groups from the UB and the ICREA programme, and around 100 researchers from the IBMB-CSIC, who work in areas linked to basic biomedicine. As a promoter of multidisciplinary research at the interface between biology and chemistry, the Institute boasts state-of-the-art science and technology infrastructure and extensive experience, which are of interest to the pharmaceutical and fine chemistry industries.

This centre is devoted to the study of the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in the biological processes relevant for the development and physiology of living organisms.
Its main lines of research are the following: Structural Biology, Developmental Biology, Gene Regulation, Plant Molecular Biology and Insect Physiology.

The Nanobioengineering Research Laboratory centralises research into the application of nanoengineering to biomedicine at the Catalan Reference Centre for Bioengineering (CREBEC), which is promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya. This centre seeks to coordinate multidisciplinary research activities in biomedical engineering that are performed in Catalonia. The Nanobioengineering Research Laboratory is a multidisciplinary facility whose activities involve investigators from the UB and the UPC, in addition to researchers from other universities or appointed through re-incorporation programmes directed at PhDs and research technicians.

The CeRQT brings together research groups from the UB devoted to Theoretical Chemistry, mainly from a multidisciplinary perspective. The three research projects developed at the PCB are: quantum simulation of biological processes, quantum mechanical calculation of thermal constants for organic reactions and heterogeneous catalysis, and theoretical and in silico modeling of biological processes

The PCB is home to companies and spin-offs whose activities are linked to its priority research lines. These companies benefit from a setting with maximum research activity and a modern infrastructure of support services.

The centralising of public research centres and companies from the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and fine chemistry sectors within the PCB brings basic research and the discovery of new drugs closer together, thus fostering a synergistic relationship between the two poles. Such combined efforts often lead to public and private sector collaboration to set up joint research units.
